Fall Favorites

Favorite(s) Fall Trend

Favorite(s) Fall Trend by mystyledexpressions featuring ASOS

  • Graphic Sweaters
  • Harem(slouchy) pants
  • Midi(full) skirts
  • Fur vest
  • Plaid/Leopard print (tartan, houndstooth...)
  • Boots(riding, ankle, over-the-knee...)
  • Green(any shade)

These are some of the fashion items I love about Fall. Isn't it awesome how each piece can be paired up, to make up an outfit? Also, I have each item(not the same) in my closet, so there's no need for me to go shopping, just to follow the trend. I'm sure if you also search your closet, you'll find similar pieces. You don't have to 'break the bank', to look good. :)

    Take care! :)

Fall Appropriate

Happy Monday! I hope you had a good weekend.

My weekend went well, I spent my weekend studying for 3 exams (coming up this week) and tried to relax as much as I can. I actually got a lot more done, than I thought I would. I'm very grateful for that! :)

The look below incorporates some of the things I love about Fall; colors and chunky knit sweaters! I've wanted faux leather pants (worn here) for so long, and I was able to purchase a pair in JcPenney earlier this year. I styled the outfit below around the pants. I couldn't complete the look without adding touches of gold, with the necklace and gold accents on the cross-body bag.

How appropriate is the look above, for Fall? You can also opt for a fur vest (black or light brown) for extra warmth.

Take care! :)

10 things I love about Fall

Happy New Month! This year started off great and it's coming to an end very well too.

It's surely Fall here in Minnesota. The last few weeks, we had non-stop rain fall, then it snowed for two days or so, but it's now back to Fall-like weather. Check out some of the things I like about Fall below:

Lake side Stroll

I decided to put together a picture board of things, that I'd bring along to a beach or lake outing. To an extent, it's an outfit inspiration! :)

Motivational Moment: I'm in Love

...with Jesus that is! ;)

I've loved this spoken word (truth) from day one! It speaks about the love of God for us (women), and no matter how much we search for that in men, we'll never find it. True love can be found in God, who can then lead you to the one He's made for you, here on earth.

Jesus is our savior, no man can fill the place/void He's made to fill. Chase God! Don't seek after men, searching for what only God can do for you. Don't let your search and desperation for love, push you away from your first true love; Jesus. He is the one who laid His life down for you, even though you don't deserve it.

Great is His love for you and me! Daily soak up His word (love) and continually be at His feet.

Take care! :)

Casually Dressed

Happy Monday! I hope you had a great weekend! I know I did! :)

My entire outfit is 'almost' from Target. I wore this look some weeks ago. The denim shirt, dress, shoes and watch are ALL from Target! Can you believe it? I can. Lol! :) Ever since I bought this denim shirt, I always find an outfit to pair it with. I know now why most ladies refer to denim shirts as an essential. Haha!

Multicolor Black and White

Hey loves!

Black and White is said to be on 'trend' for this season. Does it ever go 'out' of trend? :) Well, in honor of that, I created a look via polyvore, incorporating black and white. I also added bits of color (with the necklace and shoes), because it just brings 'life' to an outfit. Check out the look below:

Multicolor B&W

Multicolor B&W by mystyledexpressions featuring high waisted jeans

I know some people shy away from Peplum tops (or dresses), but it can work with an body shape and size, if paired with the right bottom. In the look above, the peplum top was paired with a pair of black pants. The peplum top, cinches in your waist, while accentuating your hips. Because the black pants adds a sliming effect to your bottom half, the peplum top highlights your curves on the top half.

Are you a fan of black and white, outfit combination?

Take care! :)

Mothers Day Gift Ideas

Hello!

Thank God it's Thursday! Haha. I have one last final today; a group presentation. Then, I get to go home, just for a bit though. EIther way, I'm still pumped! I can't wait to see my mommy, daddy and siblings! Yipee! :)

Well, as you all know, Mothers Day is right around the corner; Sunday, May 12! I do appreciate my parents and what they've done for me, anytime I can. But, it's never a bad idea to show more of your love, on a day especially set aside for that.

I decided to come up with some gift ideas, that can be given to those lovely women in our lives. I know my mom would appreciate any of those items below. So, take a look and let me know what you think.

Mothers Day Gift Ideas

  1. Forever21 Butterfly Print Scarf
I don't know why most of the the items I chose are nude, gold and black. Haha. Well, those shades can be paired with other various colors, so it's fine.
All these gifts are budget friendly; affordable. The Gold Watch is a bit pricey, but they are gifts I would pick out for my mom. In fact, I'm thinking of gifting my mom a gold watch (or a bag); she loves watches! But, if you're not able to present your mom (or the lovely women in your life) with any of these gifts, you can always buy a nice card with flowers. Your mom will definitely appreciate that, or whatever else you decide to give her!  It really is the THOUGHT that counts! :)
Take care! :)

Sunday Brunch

Happy Monday! I hope you had a good weekend!

Today marks the first day of final exams week for me. I have a few exams and a presentation this week. Please, keep me in your prayers! :)
I know some people refer to Friday as "Friday Funday", well why can't Sunday be known as "Sunday Funday?" Ha! For me, Sunday is a fun-day. I'm always excited for Sunday to come, even more than I am of Friday! :)

The outfit below was created with the 'fun' theme in  mind. Check it out:

And yes! This look is appropriate for Sunday service (and brunch), a dinner date, birthday party or any other occasion you consider to be 'fun'.

Red Light

Hey you! Happy April; MY Birthday month! :)
How was your weekend? I hope you enjoyed Easter, celebrating WHO it truly is about! :)
The look below was what I wore to church, two weeks ago. This Ankara dress was tailor-made for my aunt's birthday party many years ago, but I decided to wear it again. So, because I didn't want to wear it the 'same' way did the previous time, I had to 'spice' it up a bit. No, it's not Christmas, but I do love green and red paired together, most especially when gold is included! :)

Enjoy the pictures:

In Living Color

Hello loves!
I'll be honest and say that...I never thought I'll like incoporating colors into my looks, as much as I do now. Years ago, I wouldn't have wore a color-blocking outfit, because I always matched! I was the queen of  'matchy-matchy' (if there is such a thing). I'm so glad I'm now able to experiment with different styles, while staying true to myself.
I really like, simple no fuss looks. I'm not one to spend hours on getting dress. If it starts to get that way, I slow down, and go with the outfit I first had in mind!

The look below was worn to church three weeks ago:

Guest Post: The Mis-education of the Black Woman (Part Three)

Happy Monday! :)

Here is the concluding part of this guest post series, on natural hair! Read part one and part two.

Quickest ways to get frustrated on your natural hair journey

Many get frustrated & confused on their natural hair journey and most eventually give up and run back to the relaxer.

This can happen through many ways:

-Jumping on bandwagons: There are many trends going around these days that if you begin trying each and everyone of them, you will eventually wear yourself out and get nowhere in your hair journey. At the beginning of my natural hair journey, I was jumping on bandwagons and trying this or that but quickly found out that was not the way to go but instead it wore me out, got me no closer to getting to know my hair and it was making my wallet cry out.

-Comparing: When you start comparing your hair to other naturals’ hair, it will only frustrate you! No two naturals have the same hair characteristics nor can you share another natural’s journey. Get busy getting to know your hair and mastering it!

-Trying to fit in: Just because a technique or product has been badly spoken of by some does not mean it cannot work for you. Don’t be afraid to try and when you do, if it works with your hair, find how you can personalize the technique/product/took according to your hair & regimen.

-Do what you can: try building your hair regimen according to your lifestyle. If you know you are so busy you can only give your hair 2 hours a week, then it’s best to concentrate on a basic regimen (but basic does not mean getting less out of it) and low manipulative styles that will not demand you re-styling every morning (for example two strand twists)

Casual Chic: Leopard and Stripes

Happy Friday, loves! Do you have any plans for the weekend?

Your sweet and kinds words on my previous post, was really appreciated! It's one thing to dress up, experiment with my style and be comfortable with it, but it's truly amazing when others love your look, and don't hesitate to say so! Thank you, so much! :D

Here's another look I put together via Polyvore. This is a very casual look, but still on trend...with the black and white striped shirt. It can be worn to go on errands, shopping, lunch date with the girls or just for some weekend stroll.

Casual Chic

Casual Chic by mystyledexpressions featuring slim fit jeans

I wanted to mix prints, so I went along with stripes and leopard print; which I love! I added some splashes of color with the red/burgundy on the flats and army green skinny pants. This is a look I'll definitely wear (or have worn...haha)!

Do you have a favorite print or pattern?

Take care! :)

Striped Floral

Hello. Thanks so much for all the love you show me, through comments on my post and on Instagram. I really do appreciate it.

Whenever I do updos with my natural hair, I always feel as though, I look like a boy (haha). No? Well, I guess it's because the twist is so 'flat' against my head! And, my cheeks look extra chubby in these pictures... Don't you just want to pinch them? Haha :)
I've read many times, that when one wants to mix prints, one should try to mix prints that are in the same color family. Well, I think I did pretty good mixing prints in this look...

Happy Wednesday, loves!

I'm sure some of you are super excited, because it's Wednesday, which means; Friday is not so far away! Either way, I really don't mind, because I'm on Spring break, although I didn't go anywhere 'fancy.'

The look below was a casual, yet 'colorful' outfit I wore to school, sometime last week. I hope this look 'brightens' up your day, just by browsing through the pictures! :)

Guest Post: The Mis-education of The Black Woman (Part Two)

Hello! I hope you had a relaxing weekend! :)

To read part one of this guest post series, please click here. Do take time to read through the post. Don't rush through it, you might miss important details! :)

Let's hear hear from Funbi, of Datfunkyfro...again! :)

Only those with “good hair” can stay natural

I’ve heard that sentence so many times it just keeps sounding the more ridiculous each time. Many believe the less kinky your hair is the better it is…they say it’s “good hair”. But that is a whole load of nonsense because good hair is not defined by hair texture but rather hair health. Right from my childhood, many kids are dissed for their tight curls while others are praised for their “good hair”. Some ladies use it as an excuse…they don’t think they’ve got “that good hair” to be able to stay natural. Hair texture has got nothing to do with it. Anybody can wear natural hair no matter their curl pattern or ethnic background.  Whether you call it “good hair” or not, depends on how well you take care of it.

Classy Lady

Here's another creation of mine (it feels so good to say that...haha) via Polyvore. On Polyvore, I've come to realize that, most of the items are higly priced. I try to find stores that I would personally shop at, or ones that have bargain prices, but it's either the stores are not available, or the items I want are not present.

No, you don't need to pay for any items you use (just to clarify). I guess, the more time I spend on there, and experiment, the easier creating my sets will be.

Anyways, check out the look below:

Classy Lady
Classy Lady by mystyledexpressions featuring navy blue handbags

Well, the look above is something I came up with when I had nothing else to do. The dress is what inspired the look. The dress is a bit similar to the one in this post. I also have a tweed blazer similar to the one on the left.  I wanted to show off the pleats of the dress, that's why I paired it with the cropped blazer.

For a semi-casual look, the blazer can be replaced with a white or ivory colored cardigan, and the pumps with leopard print flats or wedges!  :)

Always stay Classy!
What occasion would you wear this look to?

Take care! :)

Out and About: Lost for Words (Really)

Hello.
I haven't posted a school look in a while! So, here it is. It's nothing fancy (I guess I really like that word...haha). It's very simple and basic. The skirt worn in this look has used up its shelf like. I've had enough of it. Ha. I really like the skirt, but it's too short, and everytime I wear it, I always have to pull it down. It rides up when I walk...that's a no no for me. So, it gotta go... :(

Check out the look below:

Guest Post: The Mis-education of The Black Woman (Part One)

Hey loves! I hope you all had a good weekend.

Today's guest post is from the very funky (pun intended) Funbi of Datfunkyfro. She'll speaking on the topic of Natural Hair. This will be a two-part post. The next segment will be posted...soon! :)

Let's hear from Funbi...

Taking the decision to stay natural can seem utterly ridiculous considering the way of caring for natural hair has been painted out as an impossibility in our society. However, this is one of the many lies black women have been forced to succumb to. Many are discouraged and afraid to even try letting their natural hair grow out because of false popular beliefs that have no factual root whatsoever. It’s time to realize that when it comes to wearing & caring for natural hair, we have to replace ignorance with a fresh kind of knowledge.

From an early age, we have been taught to religiously grease our hair, comb it out vigorously & watch out for those unruly new growths before diving for the creamy relaxer to make it behave. As a child, this has been my reality. There was no other way of having it. It was the norm. Then I didn’t question it & I was sure and certain this was the way to go about with my hair. But as I grew up I began to notice a few details: my hair just wouldn’t grow past a certain length. It remained short though my hair grew – I knew this because I always had hair to perm. So what was going on?

In my late teens, I discovered that there was a whole new world to taking care of my hair that I had not been handed down to me. I also realized those new growths I was meant to watch out for and set in order with some relaxer was the hair that was meant to grow out of my head, it was given naturally – that was my natural hair. And thus began my natural hair…My journey could be compared to entering a totally new dimension.

Deciding to stay natural (to let your natural hair grow out) can seem very scary, daunting and too much work. A lot of women who go ahead with it go back to the relaxer (just like I did on my first natural hair journey). This is because caring for & maintaining natural hair demands a new kind of knowledge. To stay natural, it is vital to arm yourself with information. It requires practices & information you might have lacked while wearing your hair permed. Truth is, to grow healthy natural hair, we need to turn the mis-education we’ve received right from a young age into a proper education.

The mis-education has turned natural hair into an impossibility & even nearly foolish. It has encouraged many natural hair myths and thus discourage a lot of black ladies from wearing their hair in it’s natural state. To grow out natural hair, many habits need to be broken and we need to start understanding our hair instead of trying to hide it or alter it.

Daring Valentine

Daring Valentine

Daring Valentine by mystyledexpressions featuring john lewis

I finally joined Polyvore and I'm glad I did. It's quite fun to layout outfits for different occassions.  This is my first time, that's why I'm only sharing one look with you! :(

The look  above is something I would totally wear on a date for Valentine's. It's so me. I like the sophisticated and edgy look of the blazer and burgundy skinny jeans. Since the look is a bit 'dark', I decided to spice it up with a pair of yellow pumps! I also use minimal jewelry, because that's also how I accessorize nowadays. The look is simple, yet stylish! :)

Funny enough, I have similar items like the ones above, in my closet. I came to the realization, after creating this set! I just might dress up like this to school today (minus the heels) or to church on Sunday.

Take care! :)

Guest Post: My Body; His Temple

Hello Expressionistas! One of this month's guest posts will focus on health. Go ahead and gain some knowledge from Nisa! :)

Hi beautiful people! My name is Nisa and I currently blog at A Heart of Worship. It's an absolute pleasure to be this month’s guest blogger.  I was asked to speak on the topic of health, and that I will do, but of course, I will speak through the word of God.

Recently, God has called me to make changes in some special areas of my life. The area I will speak on today however, as mentioned above, is health. Some of you may be wondering why exactly God would be concerned with what we eat and drink, how much we eat and drink, or how much or how little we exercise. But if we really stop and think about it, God concerns Himself with all areas of our lives- after all, He is the one who gave life to us!

The scripture that really brought it home for me was "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;” 1 Corinthians 6:19 [NIV]

Think about an actual temple or church where we worship....in most, eating isn't allowed. This is because it's a sacred place where we offer our sacrifices and lay down our troubles before God. We can't have the church looking filthy. Not only is this disrespectful to God but it is unsanitary and can affect our health. The same is true for our bodies-His temples...we have to be mindful of the things we are eating and drinking, how much we are eating and drinking, and how often we are exercising. Does it make sense now? I hope so!

For me personally, it has been a struggle. I was never an 'unfit' person as I was actively involved growing up. Nevertheless, the older I got, the lazier I became-sad but true. I have gotten serious though about changing this because I strongly believe, that is what God desires for my life and possibly, yours as well.

Here are some HEALTHful tips I would like to share with you:

1.
Try not to eat meals, sweets, or carbs past 8 pm

***Healthier substitutes: have breakfast, snack throughout the day (healthy snacking: granola bar, yogurt, fruits, and so forth), grab lunch if you can, and have a filling dinner... Before bed when tempted to eat, grab a fruit and drink a glass of water

Guest Post: Foundation Routine & Finding One For Your Skintone

Happy Monday, Expressionistas! I hope you're all having a great start to your Monday  morning. On my way back home from running some errands (with my sister) yesterday, it began to snow a bit. On walking out this morning, it looked like a Winter Wonderland! :)

Today's guest post is brought to you by the lovely Sade of In My Sunday Best. I know most ladies (if not all) like some sort of makeup. We do have to admit that, sometimes it's difficult to find the right shade of foundation or blush for your skintone. That's where Sade comes in to rescue us. Today, she'll be expanding your knowledge today about makeup and finding the right shade for you.

Finding a foundation really is the coloured girls burden isn’t it? I rember my teen years when I’d wear foundation shades 3x too light for me because I found it impossible to find a suitable shade.

You go to your local drugstore and there are only ever 3 or 4 pathetic attempts at offering a more ‘ethnic’ colour wheel, but there are 20 odd foundations in more or less the same shade of beige. Very annoying isn’t it.

Many of us have gone down the high end makeup route as they offer more of a colour spectrum for us, brands like MAC, NARS, Urban Decay, YSL and Chanel. Unfortunately for those of us who are students, these brands aren’t always wallet friendly.

There are a few high street brands that have heard our cries such as Maybelline, Sleek and Revlon, I’m particularly fond of sleek because they have such a wide selection and they offer very affordable high quality products.
A flawless base is always the key to a natural foundation application; if you have skin with large open pores a good primer will fill in the holes and give you a smoother base to lay your makeup ontoIn terms of brushes, I used an ELF foundation brush. It’s cheap, cheerful and does the job.
Some of you will find that you don’t actually need a full coverage foundation and a good concealer will work wonders on you. I rarely use foundation anymore and stick to concealer, as an Architecture student I am riddled with dark circles which make me look panda-like. To erase them, I use a peach toned concealer.

Blue Me Away

Hey you.

In the look below, I styled the snake print skinny pants (from Target) a different way. Ever since the first time I wore it, I couldn't wait to wear it again. The blue sweater is also from Target. I decided to get a XL size because I wanted a slouchy, comfy look, though I did have to shrink it in the dryer.

Daytime Sequin

Happy Wednesday. I hope your week started out well!

Spring semester is now in session, meaning I'm back in school after 3 weeks of break. Funny thing: I'm quite excited for school to begin, but I know that the feeling might go away after this week. Haha :)

I was inspired by a look I saw in a magazine. I liked the look, and decided to share my spin on it.

Guest Post: Survival Kit for Life

Happy Monday everyone. I hope your week was splendid! :)

Today's guest post is brought to you by Jasmine Marie of TheJourn3y. She's been such an inspiration to me and I'm so glad  that, MyStyledExpressions' first guest post of the year/month is from her. Jasmine is very full of wisdom and knowledge. One of her love and purpose is to encourage young girls and women. Please enjoy what she has to say below:

Hello MyStyledExpressions readers!

Welcome to a world where dreams become reality and exercising your faith is an everyday practice. A survival kit is a necessity for life. The most important item will be your relationship with the Creator. You cannot survive without a life line.

Affirmation: With God all things are possible.
Next, you will need Faith. Faith will be your guide when you entrust your plans to the Lord. Do not give fear room to grow.

Affirmation: My faith is bigger than my fear.
Eleanor Roosevelt says it best, “The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” The next item is belief. Believe that your dreams will become your reality. Success does not happen overnight. It is the end result of dedication, commitment, a strong work ethic, resilience, prayer and support. You have to be your biggest supporter, encourager and motivator!
